Reddit accounts for 21% of all Google AI Overview citations, with YouTube at nearly 19%. Google now surfaces Reddit threads as Community Perspectives inside local results. Most local businesses have never posted on either.

Reddit is the single most-cited source in Google AI Overviews, accounting for about 21% of all citations. YouTube is second at 18.8%. Analysis published in September 2026 found that on commercial queries, AI Overviews frequently skip the vendor's own website entirely and cite Reddit, YouTube and third-party listicles instead. Google has since started surfacing Reddit threads directly inside local results under the label Community Perspectives.

For a local business, this is the strangest and most important shift of the year. The place your customers are being told who to hire is a forum most business owners have never opened.

Why a forum outranks your website

AI systems are built to be sceptical of marketing. A business page saying "we are the best dentist in Denver" carries almost no weight, because every business page says that. A Reddit thread where three residents independently name the same dentist carries enormous weight, because nobody paid for it and the model can see that. The same logic explains YouTube: a walkthrough video of a real job is evidence in a way a service page is not.

What to do — and what not to do

  • Do not post adverts. Reddit's communities and moderators remove promotional content quickly, and a banned account is worse than no account.
  • Do answer questions. Find the subreddit for your city and for your industry. When someone asks a question you can genuinely answer — "how do I know if my roof needs replacing" — answer it well, with no pitch.
  • Do make the business findable. A complete, accurate profile so that when someone does mention you, the trail leads somewhere.
  • Do the same on Quora, and check the directories AI cites: Yelp, Thumbtack, HomeGuide, Nextdoor. A missing or inconsistent listing on any of them is a hole in the evidence.
  • Put your video on YouTube. Short clips of real work, titled the way people search. It is the second most-cited source, and it is one you fully control.

Sixty percent of AI Overview citations go to sites businesses do not own. Your own website is necessary, but it is no longer sufficient. The evidence that gets you recommended increasingly lives elsewhere.

Questions

Why does Google's AI cite Reddit so much?
Because Reddit threads contain firsthand, specific, unsponsored experience — exactly the kind of evidence a model trusts more than a business's own marketing. Reddit accounts for about 21% of all AI Overview citations, more than any other source.
Should a local business post on Reddit?
Participate, yes. Advertise, no — that gets accounts banned and threads deleted. Answer questions in local and industry subreddits, be useful, and let the business be mentioned naturally. One genuine recommendation in a relevant thread can be cited across thousands of AI answers.
